EMDR Consultation with an Experienced EMDR Clinician
Kara Guindin, LCSW, PMH-C, EMDR Certified Therapist, EMDRIA C.I.T.Hi! I’m Kara Guindin, LCSW, PMH-C, an EMDR Certified Therapist and EMDRIA Approved Consultant in Training (CIT).
I’ve been practicing EMDR since 2018 and have worked with clients presenting with a wide range of trauma and mental health concerns. I specialize in perinatal mental health, somatic therapy, and often integrate attachment theory into sessions. My consultation style is collaborative and practical, with an emphasis on helping you understand why you’re making a particular clinical decision, not simply telling you what to do next.
Consultation may include reviewing your case conceptualization, treatment planning, target selection, phases of EMDR, or navigating places where processing feels stuck.
My goal is to help you become a more grounded, confident EMDR clinician while maintaining fidelity to the standard EMDR protocol in the real world.
Who Is EMDR Consultation For?
EMDR consultation may be a good fit if you are a therapist:
Completing EMDR Basic Training and need additional consultation
Looking for individual consultation hours that may apply toward EMDRIA certification
A newer EMDR therapist wanting support as you begin using EMDR with clients
Feeling stuck with a case or unsure how to move forward
Running into blocked processing, looping, or difficulty progressing through phases
Wanting support with EMDR case conceptualization and treatment planning
Working with complex or developmental trauma
Working with dissociation or attachment-related concerns
Wanting to deepen your understanding of the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model
Looking for ways to thoughtfully integrate EMDR with somatic and attachment-based approaches
Working with birth trauma, reproductive trauma, sexual trauma, childhood trauma, or relational trauma
You do not have to bring a "perfect" case to consultation. In fact, sometimes the cases that leave you scratching your head are where consultation can be most useful.
EMDR Certification Consultation
If you are working toward EMDRIA certification, individual consultation can provide an opportunity to receive feedback on your clinical work while developing greater confidence using EMDR with your clients.
As an EMDRIA Approved Consultant in Training (CIT), I can provide up to 15 consultation hours that may be applied toward EMDRIA certification requirements, in accordance with current EMDRIA guidelines.
Certification applicants must also obtain the remaining 5 consultation hours from an EMDRIA Approved Consultant. If you are pursuing certification, we can talk through your current consultation hours and determine whether working together makes sense for your remaining requirements.
Consultation may include:
EMDR case conceptualization
Target identification and sequencing
Treatment planning
Assessment and preparation
Standard EMDR protocol and when to use other protocols
Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model
Identifying when processing becomes blocked or loops
Understanding and responding to client responses during processing
Closure and reevaluation
Complex trauma and developmental trauma
Dissociation and stabilization
Clinical decision-making and modifications to standard protocol
EMDR Case Consultation
You don't have to be pursuing certification to benefit from EMDR consultation. Sometimes you simply have a client who has you thinking:
"I'm not sure what to do next."
Case consultation provides space to slow down, look at the bigger clinical picture, and think through your options.
We might explore:
Why processing may have become stuck
Whether a client is ready for reprocessing
Target selection and sequencing
Case conceptualization through the AIP model
Preparation and stabilization
Complex trauma presentations
Dissociation
Attachment-related patterns
Appropriate modifications to the standard protocol
Integrating somatic awareness into EMDR treatment
Clinical questions that arise when working with more complex cases
The goal isn't to give you a formula to follow. It's to help you develop your own clinical reasoning and feel more confident making decisions with your clients.
